The Island of Hawaii is also known as the Big Island, as it is nearly twice the size of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. The majority of the island's Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was closed for four months this year, the longest shutdown in its history, following latest eruptions from Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. The park reopened on Sept. 22, and its Volcano House and several campgrounds were welcoming guests again in October. The island is also home to a number of luxurious resorts, most notably on its sunny Kohala Coast.
